The Sydney Opera House: Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging Strategy, 2021-23

Emily Crockford’s dazzling ‘The Phantom (Sydney) Opera House’ was selected for the cover of the iconic venue’s Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging Strategy for 2021-23. Her work was licensed alongside pieces by Sally M. Nangala Mulda and Jason Phu, to support the House’s new targets of organisational diversification and a better representative public program. Emily was honoured to be chosen to epitomise this pledged change in services and storytelling.

“Over the sea is the Oprah house and Sydney Bridge. The waves bring the water and the bridge brings the cars and trains. Lots of people. All kinds of people. My Coco Opera house is made of dark chocolate and white chocolate” says Emily.

Stockland Shopping Centres: Two Love Birds hoarding, 2021

The hordes that flock to Stockland Shopping Centres around Australia might find Lisa Scott’s Two Love Birds prettily sitting between two storefronts. The acrylic and mixed-media painting was one of a number of artworks licensed by the company to enliven their retail corridors. Lisa’s bright and punchy depiction of the birds, star crossed and pressing their beaks between a rising heart, is a fitting compliment to the commercial environment and does well to speak to the family demographic of the centres.

More art from the Studio A is expected to be licensed in the coming year.

City of Sydney Creative Hoardings: Midnight Zoo, 2020

City of Sydney’s Creative Hoarding program showcases artists’ work on a large scale in very visible locations, beautifying and transforming the visual impact of construction sites throughout the city. Selected from a national call out for artwork concepts, Midnight Zoo features the work of Emily Crockford, Lauren Kerjan, Thom Roberts and Phil Sidney. This evocative design, inspired by the artists’ visit to Taronga Zoo, has been installed in at least 12 locations across the city since its release in May 2020. Midnight Zoo ... “is a collaborative homage to the diverse and mesmerising species that populate our city and our world.” - City of Sydney. (Images: Anna Kucera)

Spilt Milk: Banner Murals, 2019

Studio A continued to bring special magic to the annual Spilt Milk summer music festival in Canberra in 2019, licensing artworks by Meagan Pelham and Emily Crockford. The works were printed at large scale across the festival grounds. Young lovers posed for selfies in front of Meagan’s love poem paintings.

City of Sydney Creative Hoardings: Sydney Opera House at Night, 2018

Hoardings.jpeg

Emily Crockford was one of ten Australian artists selected from a pool of 520 entrants for the pilot run of the City of Sydney’s Creative Hoardings program. Her original work Sydney Opera House at Night was licensed by the local Government for the free use by construction contractors and subsequently, cropped up in several highly-visible inner-city locations.

Her nocturnal rendering of the iconic sails delivered immense public value for the thousands of pedestrians and motorists that pulse through the CBD, and kickstarted her meteoric rise as a leading public and commercial muralist in Sydney.

“The piece is based on one of my previous paintings where I turned Sydney Opera House into an art canvas” says Emily. “The rectangular patterns pay homage to the Opera House tiles. The thick bold lines, offset by a starry night-time sky, highlight the strength of the structure. The painting has a dreamlike quality to it, inspired by the city moonlight, fog and fireworks”.
