Pet Portraits
Pet Portraits by Guy Fredericks. Studio A, November 2020.
Guy’s works explore his passion for animals and nature. He expresses this through a variety of techniques and forms, emphasising the wondrous and diverse facets of nature, often working in the form of soft pastel, acrylic and papier-mache.
There is a seriousness to Guy's portraiture that is motivated by his genuine respect for animals. He expresses this respect through the meditative attention he pays to every brush or pencil stroke. Guy notices every strand of fur and he strives to capture every element. The artist paints like a sculptor, he carves the shape and form of his subjects through colour and tone. His three dimensional rendering imbue his animals with a statuesque presence.
Yet the real spark and magnetism of Guy's images comes from his capacity to imbue his animals with a touch of awkward magic. Despite their realistic rendering, Guy's representational portraits do not resemble photographs. They do more. They are infused with character and a touch of the fantastical. His subjects are of this world and yet not. They are our familiar pets but more. Guy embodies these creatures with a knowing, an awareness and a mystery that is ever intriguing. A life world we want to know but is just out of reach.
