Skye Saxon

"Making art makes me feel like I want to sing and dance, it feels like that's what I am doing on the paper. Other times it makes me feel like I am telling stories. Like I am weaving magic."

Skye is a performance artist and creator of mystic characters, drawings and stories with a magical capacity for manifesting the intangible. Dreams, memories and metaphysical worlds form the substance of Skye’s work. She explores themes of divinity, magical practice and cosmology on paper, glass, textiles, and video.

“I like to play with the strange parts of myself”, she says, “to make artworks from this place, and to share this with an audience.”

As a performance artist, Skye embodies and switches between several fully realised characters: a one thousand-year-old wizard, a fighter pilot named Skye Fox, and Katerina the Steampunk Ringmaster with her motley crew of followers: Hank Octomon, Sugar Mama and others. In 2021, Skye launched her self-designed tarot deck and a side gig as Madame Witch, the Mystic Medium, who will graciously articulate profound prophecies and sage wisdoms to any soul curious about their future.

Skye has exhibited widely at Carriageworks, Bundanon, Cement Fondu, Cementa Festival, Underbelly Arts Festival and Kinokuniya. In 2022, her work was curated into ‘From impulse to action’, the inaugural exhibition of the new Bundanon Art Museum, and in 2021, her work was featured in Carriageworks’ ‘No Show’, a survey of NSW-based early career artists working out of artist-led initiatives. Most recently, she created a site-specific installation for Sydney Theatre Company; a series of semi-transparent banners imaging the universes she sees in her mind's eye.
