Degrassi Junior High, Drew Barrymore, Madonna. These are just some of the inspirations that emerging artist Lex Tan sees in their reflection. Lex uses these pop culture icons as a mirror, helping them navigate through the world, develop their art practice, and celebrate their relationship with being non-binary, queer and living with intellectual disability.
Lex's practice grew from portraiture. Their sitters are "re-cast" as iconic celebrities, with glamorous hair, daring makeup, and nostalgic fashion trends. They explain, "I draw pictures of people because I can see their celebrity identity. I have always drawn people as celebrities because they remind me of who they really are. I can connect with someone when I do a portrait of them. I designed myself as Spike from Degrassi High, Season 1, 1989-1990, because I remind myself of her. And I've always dreamed of being blonde."
The strength of Lex's portraiture saw them awarded a Professional Pathway Award from Studio A in 2023. The award offered Lex an opportunity to experiment, be bold, be seen and connect with their community. Lex has predominantly drawn portraits of people in their immediate neighbourhood, working on a small scale.
Since joining Studio A, Lex's style has continued to grow. They are evolving their portraiture practice, experimenting with landscapes, and undertaking larger-scale projects. Lex has dreams of one day becoming a famous artist and ambassador for queer people with disability.
