‘I love nature. Looking at different plants, animals and landscapes inspires me to try and capture them. - Lauren Kerjan
Colour is core to Lauren’s practice and she works predominantly in gouache, watercolour, chalk pastel and digital mediums. These mediums empower her to translate fine detail with immense softness, transforming everyday plant and animal subjects into gentle, lyrical beings. Like the turtle who confidently glides over iridescent coral in Floating Over Magical Coral (2020), or the deer in Happy Deer in Nighttime (2020) who serenely gazes out, inviting the viewer to peer back into their world.
Lauren’s imagery is highly sought after. She has produced commissions for Westpac and Liberty Speciality Markets, and in 2020 she worked with six other Studio A artists to produce Love owls and mermaids singing in the rainbow pop, a magical and monumental mural for the entrance court of the Art Gallery of New South Wales. That same year, her work was selected for a collaborative design for the City of Sydney’s Creative Hoardings project. Titled Midnight Zoo, the work features her enigmatic zebra and currently adorns hoardings across the city.
Lauren has engaged in a number of collaborations, with both Red Room Poetry and Corban and Blair, and her work has also been curated into exhibitions at Peacock Gallery, Auburn, Annandale Galleries and AIRSpace Projects, Marrickville (Session Vessels, 2018, curated by Rafaela Pandolfini).
