Hear Catherine McGuiness discuss her 2025 Archibald Prize portrait, a depiction of artist Shan Turner-Carroll – her long-time collaborator – as a mermaid.

McGuiness is a prolific Sydney-based artist whose inclusion in this year’s Archibald marks her third time as a finalist. Her vibrant entries in the 2022 and 2023 prizes portrayed artist Rosie Deacon and chef Kylie Kwong.

She was also one of the group of Studio A artists who created the 300-square-metre mural Love owls and mermaids singing in the rainbow pop at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in 2020.

The talk will take place in front of the artist’s painting in the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes 2025 exhibition.
